Feb 12, I have seen people using jack hammers on TV to dig hard ground to dig holes. (using a 5" wide bit) I was wondering if anyone had experience with this. Would it be good for removing shrub/ tree stumps by slicing thru roots? Anyone heard of the dyna digger? It's like a jackhammer w/ a treecutter.barted Reading Time: 1 min. You might start some splits but good luck breaking the stump apart. Even if you could make it work, a jackhammer can weigh as much as 90 pounds.

A general rule for cutting tree roots is don’t cut more than 25% of the root system. Measure the trunk diameter at about 4 feet from the ground. Take that measurement and multiply it by 6. Mark off that distance from the trunk and that is about where 25% of the roots can be cut.
